Storytelling at the Moth
In a city near you, there are regular “StorySlams.” At these events, anyone can put their name in a hat and get called up to tell a 5-minute-ish true story, with no notes, on the month’s theme. I started going, and eventually participating, during the post-pandemic rush for excitement and community.
Now? I’m hooked. Storytellers are judged by the audience, in the hopes of “winning” the night. I haven’t won. Yet.
There’s no question that doing this had a steep learning curve. Now, I’m a much better public speaker, with a new understanding of how to use dramatic pauses and gestures to carry a story. Also, the community is diverse and supportive. You should join in!
Here’s the crayon self-portrait I’m talking about in this story. Yes, it’s on Galaxy Aerospace letterhead. lol
